YAM (b. 1962)
YAM lives and works in Berlin and Stuttgart as a freelance painter and photographer of archaeological sites. In her work, YAM reflects on constructions of society, gender, power, and descriptions thereof in pop music, everyday life, and the mass media. YAM creates series of works and tries to remain abstract. She is presently exploring the politics and ethics of the written word in the Ethnological Museum Dahlem in Berlin. In large-format photographic prints the artist captures the practice of “storytelling” African history from a European perspective, as can be found in explanatory texts accompanying exhibits in the exhibition Art from Africa at the museum in Dahlem.
